Accomplishing your fleet goals might seem like a daunting task, especially while planning for the upcoming year, which will be here before you know it. The best-in-class fleet managers I know take the time to focus on their year-end goals while making time to plan for the new year.

As we kick off the fourth quarter, it’s time to think ahead to 2019. The last few months of the year is the starting point for evaluation and preparation for the next year. It’s important to perform exercises, such as reviewing your company’s goals and objectives to determine how you can align your fleet to meet them. It’s also key to establish SMART goals and a strategic roadmap now so you can hit the ground running in Q1. You can also plan ahead and perform tasks, like running an equity analysis to prepare for a spring order cycle.

Once January rolls around, you may want to consider performing a life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) to help you decide which vehicles to include in your fleet. Start with your spring (or next fiscal quarter) ordering cycle so you can determine how to proceed with the most viable option for your business.

Next, you can tie up loose ends by running motor vehicle record checks, assessing your risk management policy and reviewing license and title data to make sure no information is missing on your fleet.

At the end of the first quarter and into the second, your company will need to review last year's data and create benchmarks for progress. Afterward, it will become necessary to perform audits and review your fleet policy to make sure nothing has been missed.

Once in the third quarter, check performance and run an equity analysis to assess resale price of fleet vehicles. Then, if you're set to order vehicles in your fourth quarter, run another LCCA to begin. Prepare your personal mileage reports and liaise with drivers to make sure the information is correct at the end of the quarter.

At this point in the process, you undoubtedly feel as though you’ve accomplished a lot; however, there is still more to be done! It's important to check every detail and leave no stone unturned.
